BREAKING KNEES!!!
Sure, I can be an a-hole, even loathesome. I have learned that it's good for people to hate someone who enjoys being a prick - so I am embracing it. I even despise myself sometimes when I find Skip Bayless agrees with some of the things I've thought (Eagles in the Super Bowl!). And am as big a Pats hater as anyone.
Sure, I've jokingly wished out loud that I wanted Tom Brady to succumb to serious injury - I even mentioned that it should be his knee (somehow, fate forgot that I mentioned this should happen at the ESPYs and that he should fall into Derek Jeter and injure his knee too, but 1 out of 2 is a start, I suppose). But other than Tim McCarver's voicebox I've never wished specific harm to any athlete or pseudo-celebrity not named Rachel Ray.

A witness told the Melbourne Magistrates Court the alleged victim had been egged on by a cheering crowd of up to 30 men to perform with the hired stripper, Linda Maree Naggs, after the groom sat down after spending less than a minute with her.

The witness said he heard the man scream and get to his feet.
''Why did you do that for ... you didn't have to do that,'' he said the man yelled."

The longtime Republican representative was serving time after he pleaded guilty to exchanging political favors for money and gifts.
Ney resigned from office and was sentenced to 30 months in prison, first in West Virginia, then in a halfway house in Cincinnati. Ney served only 17 1/2 months of his sentence.
Sources said it's likely Ney’s sentence was reduced because he completed substance abuse therapy behind bars. Ethics groups said they’re satisfied and that even the reduced sentence sent a message to other politicians.
“Mr. Ney has clearly been punished for his behavior; he has no more career. He gave up all the power that he had. I wouldn’t say life is exactly great for Mr. Ney right now,” said Melanie Sloan of Citizens for Ethics in Washington.
Since being at the halfway house, Ney has been allowed to hold a job outside the facility during daytime hours."

Mauritania junta names new prime minister - The Irish Times - Thu, Aug 14, 2008
General Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, who ousted President Sidi Mohamed Ould Cheikh Abdallahi last week, has promised to hold fresh presidential elections in the oil-producing northwest African country as soon as possible.
A broad majority of both chambers of parliament have thrown their weight behind the coup, which followed a political crisis in which Mr Abdallahi named two governments in quick succession in recent months before sacking the heads of the armed forces.
Mr Abdel Aziz has been meeting the heads of various political parties this week, aiming to garner support for a new government which his self-styled State Council has said it will appoint to rule the country until a presidential election can be held.
Mr Abdel Aziz also sent delegations to fellow Arab and African countries, hoping to explain his reasons for staging the coup and mollify an international community that has largely condemned the ousting of Mauritania's first democratically-elected leader."
Charleston Daily Mail - Kanawha County - Former football player found guilty of child neglect
Rainest Crawford, 24, of Charleston was accused of child neglect causing serious injury after his 6-week-old baby was brought to Women and Children's Hospital Dec. 6, 2006 with two leg fractures and a skull fracture.
Crawford, who testified in his own defense on Wednesday, said he was only trying to keep the infant from falling off his bed when her older brother jumped and bounced her off.
'It all happened so fast,' he told the jury. 'I grabbed her, and I didn't realize she was hurt. She seemed alright.'
Prosecutors, however, said the 210-pound former University of Charleston football player intentionally harmed the baby. Their primary evidence was that Crawford was the only one in the room with the baby at the time and he told doctors, the mother and police for two days that he didn't know how she sustained those injuries."

Driver in Fatal Adams County Bus Crash Reaches Plea Deal / Wausau and Northcentral Wisconsin
46-year old Barry Jacobson entered the plea during a court appearance Thursday. He also pleaded no contest to seven misdemeanor counts of reckless driving causing bodily harm. Four of those counts were originally felonies, but were reduced as part of the plea bargain.
Jacobson was sentenced to three years probation for the misdemeanor charges. If he completes that sentence without breaking the law, he will not be sentenced for the felony conviction.
As conditions of his sentence, Jacobson may not drive commercially while on probation, and will have his license revoked for 1 year. He also must complete 150 hours of community service, and write an essay about the impact his negligence had on the victims and their families. Of Course if the rumors of being born in Canada are also true, that could put him up to FOUR citizenships in four different countries. He is truly an “International candidate”, but, is he a LEGAL candidate for the position of POTUS?
Probably not the best time for barky to take a vacation (although he’s probably scrambling to get a more authentic looking forgery of his COLB while there). His return will not be an enjoyable one. I hope he has decided to remain cut off from news sources while he relaxes and this takes him as a HUGE surprise! LOL"

Vampire-Romance Novel "Breaking Dawn" Sells 1.3 Million In One Day--And Readers Hate It
Why do we bring this up? Because what's happening with Breaking Dawn, the highly-anticipated conclusion to Stephenie Meyer's vampire-romance novel series, sounds similar.
Breaking Dawn sold 1.3 million copies in its first day—an impressive feat for a non-Harry Potter book. But now, disappointed readers have been taking their copies back in protest. In fact, one enterprising former Stephenie Meyer fan, has launched a campaign to return the books on Amazon's message board."

At a CW press conference, Dawn Ostroff told reporters that Veronica as we know it is over, but that she is talking to Rob Thomas and Kristen Bell about a 'future project.'
I just checked in with Rob Thomas, who tells me:
'I haven't heard about a future project yet, but I suppose I'd listen. Would love to work with Kristen again, however.'
When I ask point-blank if VM is over, Rob tells me:
'I believe we're out of hope.'
I am...stunned. I know we should have seen this coming, but honestly, after seeing the shows the CW is bringing on next season (Farmer dating show? Beauty pageant?) I'm honestly sick to my stomach.

Breaking down UFC 87 - Josh Gross - SI.com
With a win over Jon Fitch at UFC 87 in Minneapolis on Saturday, St. Pierre will solidify his status as the best in class, hands down. But if G.S.P. loses, he'll likely ink himself as a one-fight champion, a fighter who can win a belt, but can't defend it. After all, he won the welterweight title in Nov. 2006 after beating Matt Hughes, only to lose it to Matt Serra in his subsequent fight.
But St. Pierre and Jon Fitch, regarded as the top two fighters at 170 pounds, should come together for a competitive and technical five-round main-event title fight at UFC 87 in Minneapolis."

Superstore chains are getting into the spirit of things. Borders Group (NYSE: BGP) will be hosting release parties tonight at 900 of its stores, complete with costume contests, trivia, and character debates.
As the heir apparent to J.K. Rowling's Scholastic (Nasdaq: SCHL) series of Harry Potter books, chains hope they have another magical hit series on their hands. Their efforts aren't just about summer release parties -- they're also attempts to engage young readers, an audience that real-world retailers like Borders, Barnes & Noble (NYSE: BKS), Books-A-Million (Nasdaq: BAMM), and Hastings Entertainment (Nasdaq: HAST) desperately need in order to survive in an age where youngsters are fixated on the Internet. FLATULENCE JOKE IS WORLD'S OLDEST
Academics have compiled a list of the most ancient gags and the oldest, harking back to 1900BC, is a Sumerian proverb from what is now southern Iraq.
'Something which has never occurred since time immemorial; a young woman did not fart in her husband's lap,' goes the joke.
Randy pharaohs, thirsty ox-drivers and barbers also feature in the list.
The oldest British joke dates back to the 10th Century, and uses the traditional question and answer format to suggestively poke fun at Anglo-Saxon men.
'What hangs at a man's thigh and wants to poke the hole that it's often poked before? A key.'"

Breaking news: Echelon construction suspended | The Movable Buffet | Los Angeles Times
'Due to the difficult environment in today's capital markets, as well as weak economic conditions, we have decided to delay our Echelon project on the Las Vegas Strip. Our present expectation is to resume construction in three to four quarters, assuming credit market conditions and the economic outlook improves.'
Though rumors of problems with Echelon construction financing had been widespread, the resort was actually already being built. I don't think anyone was fully prepared for Boyd Gaming (one of the local companies that really has mastered the Vegas market for decades) to simply bring the project to a total, if ostensibly temporary, halt."

Now, as athletes are arriving and the media center is up and running in Beijing, thousands of journalists are realizing that their fears have been confirmed: Chinese authorities are indeed blocking Web sites of Amnesty International as well as Tibetan and Taiwanese groups. But not for long. Meyer's growing popularity is like a flashing billboard on our pop culture landscape.
The 34-year-old creator of the 'Twilight' teen vampire series is so sizzling hot, it's not a stretch to suggest she's heir apparent to J.K. Rowling, who gave the world Harry Potter.
The self-assured Meyer doesn't seem rattled by the comparison.

The radicals and ultra-nationalists who plan to rally Tuesday evening view Karadzic as a hero even though an international tribunal has charged him with genocide, crimes against humanity and violations of the law of war.
