Sunday Herald: International: International

Read More Here: "EVERY WAR has them, snapshots that are hard to forget. Short as it was, this one was no exception. The stench from a maggot-ridden body rotting by the roadside. An ice cream offered by refugees who had lost all that they possessed. A looter's truck full of booze. The haunted look on the face of a grandmother who had seen a mother and son crushed beneath the tracks of a tank.

Unlike most of the Georgians, Ossetians and Russians caught up in the blood-letting of recent days, I can move on, out and away from the shadow that such events and images will cast over the lives of the people here for years to come."

Big-brained animals evolve faster

Read More Here: "Ever since Darwin, evolutionary biologists have wondered why some lineages have diversified more than others. A classical explanation is that a higher rate of diversification reflects increased ecological opportunities that led to a rapid adaptive radiation of a clade. A textbook example is Darwin finches from Galapagos, whose ancestor colonized a competitors-free archipelago and rapidly radiated in 13 species, each one adapted to use the food resources in a different way. This and other examples have led some to think that the progenitors of the major evolutionary radiations are those that happened to be in the right place and at the right time to take advantage of ecological opportunities. However, is it possible that biological diversification not only depends on the properties of the environment an ancestral species finds itself in, but also on the features of the species itself? Now a study supports this possibility, suggesting that possessing a large brain might have facilitated the evolutionary diversification of some avian lineages."

What is behind the record-breaking spree at Water Cube?_English_Xinhua

Along with the world marks, there were dozens of new Olympic records, continental records, national records and personal bests. Is there really something special with the Water Cube? Or does Speedo's revolutionary swimsuit propel swimmers go much faster?"

Breaking News: Ney Released From Halfway House - News Story - WTOV Steubenville

Read More Here: "CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Former Ohio U.S. Rep. Bob Ney was released from a halfway house Friday, sources told NEWS9's Scott MacFarlane.

The longtime Republican representative was serving time after he pleaded guilty to exchanging political favors for money and gifts.

Ney resigned from office and was sentenced to 30 months in prison, first in West Virginia, then in a halfway house in Cincinnati. Ney served only 17 1/2 months of his sentence.

Sources said it's likely Ney’s sentence was reduced because he completed substance abuse therapy behind bars. Ethics groups said they’re satisfied and that even the reduced sentence sent a message to other politicians.

“Mr. Ney has clearly been punished for his behavior; he has no more career. He gave up all the power that he had. I wouldn’t say life is exactly great for Mr. Ney right now,” said Melanie Sloan of Citizens for Ethics in Washington.

Since being at the halfway house, Ney has been allowed to hold a job outside the facility during daytime hours."

REP-AM.COM Election NewsNotorious ad's maker takes aim at Obama

Read More Here: "UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. — Floyd Brown lumbered his 6-foot-6 frame through the doorway at a small cafe here and ordered two coffees.

The woman at the counter craned her neck until she met his eyes.

'My!' she exclaimed. 'You block out the sun.'

She couldn't have known how deeply her observation might resonate with the many Democrats whose political aspirations the longtime conservative operative has tried to sink.

Brown, 47, is known best for creating a controversial television ad that helped derail Michael Dukakis' presidential run in 1988 by linking the former Massachusetts governor to a prison-furlough program and a felon named Willie Horton.

Two decades later, he's set up a temporary office in the suburbs southwest of Tacoma, Wash., where he's running a campaign aimed at pushing Sen. Barack Obama's presidential hopes down a similar path. Brown is producing ads, heavy with innuendo, questioning the Democratic nominee's religious background and patriotism."

Now, this is only one of Barry Soetero’s..errr Barack Obama’s problems. There is still the issue broken by Texas Darlin’s weblog of Barack’s posted COLB being a forgery and actually belonging to his sister before it was photoshoped as well as the possiblity of having yet another citizenship in Indonesia. Of Course if the rumors of being born in Canada are also true, that could put him up to FOUR citizenships in four different countries. He is truly an “International candidate”, but, is he a LEGAL candidate for the position of POTUS?

Probably not the best time for barky to take a vacation (although he’s probably scrambling to get a more authentic looking forgery of his COLB while there). His return will not be an enjoyable one. I hope he has decided to remain cut off from news sources while he relaxes and this takes him as a HUGE surprise! LOL"

The pick becomes a second-rounder if he plays in 70 percent and the Jets make the playoffs. Should the Jets make it to the Super Bowl and Favre takes 80 percent of the snaps, the Packers would get a first-round pick."

Sam Thaiday ban after breaking Broncos club code | The Australian

Read More Here: Sam Thaiday ban after breaking Broncos club code | The Australian: "At the start of 2006, the Broncos introduced a code of conduct which every player was required to sign. It outlined a list of guidelines governing behaviour at the club.

It includes Broncos players being open to drug testing for performance-enhancing and recreational drugs at any time. There is also a strict dress policy and rules on punctuality for training sessions and club functions.

It is understood Thaiday slept in and missed the special training session for the undermanned forward pack, with the Broncos also missing injured lock Tonie Carroll and utility David Stagg, who has remained in Brisbane with his wife expected to give birth tomorrow, for the match at Auckland's Mt Smart Stadium.

After centre Justin Hodges' two-week ban for a gesture behind the back of referee Tony Archer, Broncos skipper Darren Lockyer admitted Thaiday's absence was a major blow."

Superstore chains are getting into the spirit of things. Borders Group (NYSE: BGP) will be hosting release parties tonight at 900 of its stores, complete with costume contests, trivia, and character debates.

As the heir apparent to J.K. Rowling's Scholastic (Nasdaq: SCHL) series of Harry Potter books, chains hope they have another magical hit series on their hands. Their efforts aren't just about summer release parties -- they're also attempts to engage young readers, an audience that real-world retailers like Borders, Barnes & Noble (NYSE: BKS), Books-A-Million (Nasdaq: BAMM), and Hastings Entertainment (Nasdaq: HAST) desperately need in order to survive in an age where youngsters are fixated on the Internet. It shouldn't come as a surprise to find three of the four retailers struggling with share prices in the single digits."

FLATULENCE JOKE IS WORLD'S OLDEST

FLATULENCE JOKE IS WORLD'S OLDEST: "Breaking news about breaking wind: the world's oldest joke is a one-liner about flatulence, researchers say.

Academics have compiled a list of the most ancient gags and the oldest, harking back to 1900BC, is a Sumerian proverb from what is now southern Iraq.

'Something which has never occurred since time immemorial; a young woman did not fart in her husband's lap,' goes the joke.

Randy pharaohs, thirsty ox-drivers and barbers also feature in the list.

The oldest British joke dates back to the 10th Century, and uses the traditional question and answer format to suggestively poke fun at Anglo-Saxon men.

'What hangs at a man's thigh and wants to poke the hole that it's often poked before? A key.'"

Breaking news: Echelon construction suspended | The Movable Buffet | Los Angeles Times: "Boyd Gaming announced today they were suspending construction on the nearly $5-billion Echelon project that is going up where the Stardust once was located. According to the statement:

'Due to the difficult environment in today's capital markets, as well as weak economic conditions, we have decided to delay our Echelon project on the Las Vegas Strip. Our present expectation is to resume construction in three to four quarters, assuming credit market conditions and the economic outlook improves.'

Though rumors of problems with Echelon construction financing had been widespread, the resort was actually already being built. About $80,000 worth of damage was done to the home, the sheriff's office said.

Floyd Harlin Rainear, 46, of 4572 Fairport Court in High Point, was brought in for questioning Tuesday and told detectives that he was responsible for the flooding at 1463 Meadowlands Drive, the sheriff's office said. Midnight of the Breaking Dawn :: Lifestyles :: Post-Tribune

Midnight of the Breaking Dawn :: Lifestyles :: Post-Tribune: "Midnight movie premieres are a weekly phenomenon this summer in Northwest Indiana.

A midnight release for a book , however, is a very rare thing once only reserved for a certain British boy wizard.

But 'Breaking Dawn,' the final chapter in Stephenie Meyer's 'Twilight' young adults book series filled with teen angst, romance, vampires and werewolves, seems a worthy successor, at least in terms of hype.

The two regional branches of Borders and Barnes and Noble expect such huge sales, they're hosting themed parties Friday featuring everything from ballroom dance lessons to scavenger hunts to themed drinks like Demon's Blood.

Then, hours before dawn on Saturday, '"

BREAKING: McCain 'Proud of Obama/Paris/Britney Commercial' - The Washington Independent - U.S. news and politics - washingtonindependent.com: "Today, McCain’s people are saying that Obama has “played the race card.” Excuse me, but are we to believe it is an accident that McCain’s “frivolous and irresponsible” Hollywood celebrity implication connects a black man with a couple of blond women? Like, oh, I dunno, those other frivolous and irresponsible Hollywood folks, OJ and Nicole?

The racist undertone of the McCain ad certainly should be considered."

NGOs: China Is Breaking Olympics Promises

NGOs: China Is Breaking Olympics Promises: "In the months preceding the Beijing Olympics, officials from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) assured wary journalists they would have unfettered access to the Internet while reporting the Games. In April, for instance, IOC official Hein Verbruggen, who was head of the inspection team in Beijing this spring, told reporters the Chinese government would not impose Internet censorship on Olympics journalists.

Now, as athletes are arriving and the media center is up and running in Beijing, thousands of journalists are realizing that their fears have been confirmed: Chinese authorities are indeed blocking Web sites of Amnesty International as well as Tibetan and Taiwanese groups. 'The Chinese government won't allow the spread of any information that is forbidden by law or harms national interests on the Internet,' the official Xinhua news agency reported on July 31. 'If a few Web sites are difficult to browse, it's mainly because they have spread content that is banned by the Chinese laws,' Xinhua quoted Sun Weide, the Beijing Olympics spokesman, as saying at a press conference in Beijing's Olympics media center. 'The Internet is regulated according to law in China, just like in other countries.'"

Books: Meyer unfazed as 'Twilight' fame dawns - Salt Lake Tribune

Books: Meyer unfazed as 'Twilight' fame dawns - Salt Lake Tribune: "CAVE CREEK, Ariz. - Stephenie Meyer is the most famous writer you've never heard of.
But not for long. Meyer's growing popularity is like a flashing billboard on our pop culture landscape.
The 34-year-old creator of the 'Twilight' teen vampire series is so sizzling hot, it's not a stretch to suggest she's heir apparent to J.K. Rowling, who gave the world Harry Potter.
The self-assured Meyer doesn't seem rattled by the comparison.
'There will never be another J.K. Rowling. That's a lot of pressure on me, isn't it?' says Meyer, curled up on a leather sofa in her comfortable and airy adobe-style home in this sun-scorched desert community north of Phoenix. 'I'm just happy being Stephenie Meyer. That's cool enough for me.'"
