MyFox Kansas City | Copper Thieves Breaking Into Habitat For Humanity Houses: "We all know copper theft is on the rise in the Kansas City area, but the latest target of copper thieves is hitting a local charity hard.
Two Habitat For Humanity homes in Kansas City on one street were stripped of all the copper wires and tubing, costing $5,000. It's devastating Habitat's budget and its families.
Four homes have been hit in the last two weeks.
'We're looking at plumbing and wiring and the labor for each one,' Ken Wallace with Habitat For Humanity KC said.
Habitat had already made changes to battle copper thefts. It uses mostly plastics throughout the home called Pex, so thieves aren't getting much money.
'It's probably less than $100, but that less than $100 is costing us thousands,' Wallace said.
Habitat is also putting bars on the windows during construction and now they think they need to go to the next step.
'If we could raise money for wireless alarm systems, what they will do is allow us to protect the houses in the construction stage,' Wallace said."
